Nevin, I, Annette, Kees, Liesl, and Briton are flying Southwest to LAX on Friday Sept 1st.  Nevin is returning on Tuesday and the rest of us are staying until Friday sept 8th.  We are lodging at Oceanside.  No, we do not have tickets yet so let’s get them together.  Whatever is the best deal will be best for us.  The game starts at 5 PM California time.  Miles wants to visit with us on Sunday and since he is not big on church stuff right now I don’t know yet how to plan the Sunday.  I was a bit disappointed that Utah seems to be off the radar screen right now.  BYU is sopping up all the recruiting news and Bronco gets voted by the Tribune on the State influence list.  KW is not even listed.  Hopefully, we can do all our talking on the playing field.  Love, Garth

PS.  Kees, Liesl, and Briton may be up to doing Disneyland with you.  I am not much of a fan of that stuff anymore.

Thanks for the note garth. My son John purchased this magazine on Saturday and I have been devouring it all weekend. It is in my oppinion, the best out there. Remember Street & Smiths? We used to buy it all the time in the 60's and 70's, but I stopped buying it about 10 years ago when it turned into a magazine with little information and a ton of ads. I also like anthon and sporting news magazines.

We just booked our tickets on Delta to fly to the UCLA game. We are flying into john wayne on thursday morning the 31st of august, and flying out on wednesday morning sept 6. I have not yet purchased game tickets, have you? I was thinking we might get better seats buying them from UCLA's site. Normally the seats given to the visiting team to sell (utah) are bad end zone seats. I think for the same price, we might be able to dind better seats than those. I have talked to Jeff and Daniel Limburg and they have expressed a desire to go with us to the game. Let me know if you have game tickets, and if so, what is your section number and seat numbers?

There are 5 of us going from my family. Richard (Jen's Husband) John and I will fly out as stated, thursday the 31st, and Patty and Jen will fly out Friday afternoon sept 1st, after they attend Swiss days in Heber City. We plan on visiting carol on Sunday the 3rd, and going to church with her. On monday and tuesday the 5 of us are going to Disneyland / Califirnia Vacation. We booked a hotel around Anaheim that gave us a great rate and it included the 2 day hopper passes to Disneyland.

This will be a fun trip. Let me know what your family is planning.

Love, Bro matt

Using Phil Steele to Compare Utah, TCU, and BYU…

Well, since it’s official now, and both TCU and the Y are picked ahead of our beloved Utes (heh, heh, heh), here’s why I REALLY like our chances against them this season. I am going to use quotations from Phil Steele’s 2006 College Football Preview, because I think he states very well the way I feel about this. So here are the quotes:

The Utes were arguably the best team in the MWC last season, but did not take home the title. Everything went TCU’s way last season and they finished with an unbeaten MWC record and an overall 11-1 mark. The thing that concerns me about this year’s Frog squad is how fortunate they were last season. They benefited from +21 in turnovers, +5 net close wins, and they meet the criteria for both my offensive and defensive “Yards Per Point (YPP) Factor” [which states that teams with a low YPP tend to have a weaker record the next season]. With just 12 starters back, odds are they will not be as fortunate as last season, but it still should be another outstanding year.

Surprisingly, the Utes finished the 2005 season at 4-4 despite outgaining MWC foes by a league best 86.5 YPG. That was an inexperienced Utah team which had the 2nd fewest returning starters in the MWC. This year they have the most returning starters (13), have the deepest QB spot in the NCAA, and come in with my #2-rated offense and #2-rated defense (in the MWC). They also get key games vs TCU and BYU at home.

In my 2004 preview, 4 of my 7 sets of power ratings called for the Utes to have an unbeaten season and not only did they achieve that, they became the first non-BCS team to make it to one of the BCS bowls (where they dominated Pitt 35-7 in the Fiesta Bowl). This season, 3 of my 7 power ratings call for the Utes to go unbeaten overall (much like 2004), so it could be another special season.

The BYU Coogers outgained league foes by 59.8 YPG last year, the third in the league and finished 5-3 in the MWC despite having 2 net close losses. This year, BYU has the most explosive offense (my #1 rated) in the MWC and the defense should remain healthier. While they have tough road games (TCU, AF, Colo. St., Utah), they will make some noise in an ever-improving conference.

Phil Steele’s Predicted Order of Finish:
1. Utah
2. TCU
3. BYU
4. San Diego St.
5. Colorado St.
6. UNLV
7. Air Force
8. Wyoming
9. New Mexico
